چکیده

Scanning-tunneling-microscope (STM) is an instrument not only used to see individual atoms by imaging, but also used to touch and pick-up the atoms or to hear their vibrations by means of manipulation and spectroscopy [1]. In this perspective, the STM can be considered as the eyes, hands and ears of the scientists connecting our macroscopic world to the exciting atomic and nanoscopic world. Here, we use a variety of STM atom/molecule manipulation procedures to investigate the electronic and structural properties of nanoscale biomolecules such as chlorophylla, carotene and amyloid β/A4 precursor protein at an atomic level. As an example of STM manipulation, single molecule switching of chlorophyll-a is presented below.

Adsorption-geometry induced transformation of self-assembled nanostructures of an aldehyde molecule on Cu(110).

From an interplay of high-resolution STM imaging/manipulation and DFT calculations, we have revealed that different self-assembled nanostructures of BA molecules on Cu(110) are attributable to specific molecular adsorption geometries, and thus the corresponding intermolecular hydrogen bonding patterns. The STM manipulations demonstrate the feasibility of switching such weak-hydrogen-bonding pat...

Nanoscale assembly of superconducting vortices with scanning tunnelling microscope tip

Vortices play a crucial role in determining the properties of superconductors as well as their applications. Therefore, characterization and manipulation of vortices, especially at the single-vortex level, is of great importance. Among many techniques to study single vortices, scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) stands out as a powerful tool, due to its ability to detect the local electronic s...

Probing the conformation of physisorbed molecules at the atomic scale using STM manipulation.

We use scanning tunneling microscope (STM) manipulation and density functional theory calculation to investigate the structural properties of individual sexiphenyl molecules physisorbed on a Ag(111) surface at 6 K. The molecule-surface atomic registry is precisely determined by using atomic markers and a sexiphenyl functionalized tip. The calculations confirm the alternating twist of the sexiph...

Manipulating, Reacting, and Constructing Single Molecules with a Scanning Tunneling Microscope Tip

The fascinating advances in atom and molecule manipulation with the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip allow scientists to fabricate artificial atomic scale structures, to study local quantum phenomena, or to probe physical and chemical properties of single atoms and molecules on surfaces. Recent achievements in individual synthesis of single molecules with the STM tip further open up an e...

REVIEW ARTICLE Scanning tunneling microscopy single atom/molecule manipulation and its application to nanoscience and technology

Single atom/molecule manipulation with a scanning-tunneling-microscope STM tip is an innovative experimental technique of nanoscience. Using a STM tip as an engineering or analytical tool, artificial atomic-scale structures can be fabricated, novel quantum phenomena can be probed, and properties of single atoms and molecules can be studied at an atomic level. The STM manipulations can be perfor...
